ABOUT GOLD REEF CITY CASINO

The Gold Reef City Casino complex includes one of Johannesburg’s largest casinos as well as restaurants, bars, theatres, a theme park and a hotel. The complex is vast and entertains thousands of visitors 24 hours a day. This footfall makes this venue particularly hazardous in the event of an emergency. The Gold Reef Casino Hotel can sleep 120 guests across 38 lavishly decorated rooms.

THE BRIEF

Clayton Communications was commissioned to design, supply and install a digital and networkable voice alarm system at the Gold Reef City Hotel that meets the most rigorous international standards for safety compliance for a voice alarm system (specifically EN-54 standards). The digital networkable system was selected so that it can be extensively expanded in the future to cover the casino floors, restaurants, theatres and car parks. Particular attention needed to be paid to the aesthetic of the building and so the installation and finishing needed to meet the highest standards.

THE INSTALLATION

The voice alarm system was delivered on schedule and within a very tight budget. The installation was signed off by Bosch South Africa as meeting their technical standards and the customer was very happy with the functionality and aesthetic of the system. The system consists of:

  • 170x fireproof ceiling loudspeakers
  • 12x fireproof box speakers
  • 4000m of PH30 cable
  • 600m of CAT6 cable
  • Digital system controller
  • 2x Digital power amplifier
  • 1x Backup digital amplifier

Our project manager and installation team worked closely with hotel management to gain access to the hotel rooms and also to ensure that no guests were disrupted during the installation

The voice alarm system provides Tsogo Sun’s customers and staff a safe and controlled management of evacuation in the event of an emergency. Each floor and wing is on a separate zone so that a phased evacuation can occur to prevent ‘bottlenecks’ and overcrowding at exits. Clear and concise messages are controlled by the in-built message manager with security personnel able to override any announcements from various control points within the casino. The system has in-built line monitoring that continually checks the system for faults to ensure optimal operation is maintained at all times. Error and fault logging is automatically emailed to the head of security.
